- Conference Board Representative Office in Beijing is Approved
The Ministry of Commerce has approved The Conference Board’s application for a representative office in China. The process was longer than for a commercial application because of TCB’s non-profit status, which placed it with other "non-governmental organizations" during approval. During her visit to Beijing in December, Gail Fosler met with Madame Ma Xiuhong, Vice Minister of MofCom, who welcomed cooperative research and exchanges with The Conference Board, especially in the area of forecasting methodology.
- Nobel Economist Douglass North was the guest of The China Center for a week of events in Beijing during the week of July 9-13, 2007.
Dr. North’s books on how institutions shape society and affect economic progress are widely read in China and he attracted large audiences of economists and economic researchers at forums hosted by the National Bureau of Statistics, the Development Research Center of the State Council and Tsing Hua University’s School of Economics and Management. His presentation at SASAC’s Eminent Persons Forum on the evening of July 10 drew over 400 avid listeners. China Center Founding Members and Conference Board guests spent an evening with Doug North on July 11. The dinner was hosted by The Conference Board’s new President and CEO Jon Spector. Gail Fosler invited the members to discuss their companies’ experiences with China’s economic transition and its institutional framework and what they saw as the prospects for long term economic growth.
